Excellent product!

I’ve been using film screens for over 10 years now to print images onto my pottery. Small Dog makes the best screens that I’ve used so far. I recommend the complete kit in all of my workshops to folks who would like to start making their own screens with minimal trial and error. When used properly the light kit, screens and printing supplies make for a super easy, successful experience. I’ve used this kit in my in person classes and since the light takes only one minute to expose (compared to other methods which can take up to 15 min) I am able to help multiple students create screens quickly, a huge plus when you are using a bathroom as a darkroom! The film itself is my absolute favorite. I am able to get detailed prints and the quality of the screen is top notch. I also love that the unexposed screens store easily in the dark sleeve included with the kit and last longer then other screens I’ve used. Personally I like to keep screens on hand for any time the mood for a new image strikes and Small Dog makes that super easy. Finally, Trish (the owner) is a fabulous human who is super helpful with any questions I have and has given me the best customer service. I would consider her a friend now even though we have never met. If you are thinking about starting a screen printing project, this is the place to be. I highly recommend this company to everyone.

Early User Of Small Dog Prints

Hi there, Small Dog Folks!

I just did my first test sample, and parts of it didn't develop/wash out. I used my own transparency. I'm not sure what I did wrong, either over developing or under developing, but I am certainly going to keep at this as I know that I am just starting out and do need to get a feel for the process.

The one thing that I plan to change is the plastic sleeve. It is not easy to get the screen and transparency in there quickly as it is awkward and hard to open and slide these 2 sheets in.

I think that I am going to have a glass company cut 2 sheets of glass. I plan to back one in black cloth or attach one of the black plastic sheets to it and then place the other glass on top when developing a screen. I think that will be easier and quicker rather than trying to slide the screen and transparency into the plastic sleeve. Also, I think that glass will compress the screen and transparency together more tightly and flat thus resulting in a better screen, I hope.

I watched Kathy Skaggs's you tube video about this, and she made this minor adjustment using glass instead of the plastic sleeve. I think that this will make the process easier for me.

In the meantime, I will try another sample and keep at it. I appreciate all of your instructions and product!

Thank you!

Amazingly easy silkscreens! Love love Love!

I have been silkscreening for 25 years but for the last 20 have used a thermofax and have been so frustrated dealing with screens that wear out fast with underglazes. Even if you can find a machine, they cost upwards of a grand and a roll of thermo paper is over $400. Then I learned about SmallDog from a fellow potter and after finding a closet to make dark and planning my developing for the evening I am off and running, I made 48 silkscreen images over the last 3 days from 8 sheets of 8.5 x 11 screens. I tested a bunch before I made this review and have since ordered more screens - that says it all!
